Glow plug policy
Glow plugs are electrical heating devices used in diesel engines to help start a vehicle. Diesel burns at a much lower temperature compared to petrol, and so doesn’t require a spark to ignite the fuel. Instead, diesel engines use compression force to create the heat required to ignite the fuel and air mix. In cold start conditions, a diesel engine requires some help from a glow plug.
Although we take the greatest of care when extracting glow plugs it must be understood that breakages can and do occur, albeit rarely. Approx 1/100 at the time of writing.
Modern vehicles have aluminium cylinder heads, glow plugs are made of steel. This combination of materials causes significant corrosion over time, effectively welding the plugs to the head. That combined with lack of maintenance, carbon build up and constantly getting hot then cold means even with the greatest care, breaks can still occur.
The costs involved with dealing with a snapped glow plug can be very costly & sometimes render the vehicle unusable; therefore it is advisable that considerable thought is given before deciding to go ahead with glow plug/s replacement. We do not have the equipment to carry out snapped glow plug removal.
It should be recognised that the fact that it has broken, does not demonstrate any degree of negligence on the part of the repairer and it is simply a matter of wear and tear failure and despite best efforts, the glow plug(s) broke.
